Why doesn’t God do anything about evil and suffering? This is a common question asked by Christians and atheists alike. A philosopher once remarked that if evil and suffering exists in the world, then God is either not good or not all-powerful. How do we answer this difficult question?
Let’s read together Psalm 34:8; Job 11:7-11; and Isaiah 44:24.
The Bible claims God is indeed good and all-powerful. If so, then why is there evil and suffering in the world?
Let’s read together Genesis 1:1-31; 3:1-15; and Matthew 13:24-30.
The parable of the wheat and tares can give us some insight to why there is evil and suffering in the world. The man who sowed good seed is God. It was an enemy who sowed the tares to try to ruin the field. That enemy is the devil. Note when God created the heavens and earth and everything in it, everything He created was good. God is not responsible for the evil and suffering in the world. It was the devil who introduced sin into the world.
Let’s read together 1 Corinthians 4:9; Ephesians 6:12; and Revelation 12:7-10.
We are caught in a conflict between Jesus and Satan. We have discussed in a previous lesson why God doesn’t kill Satan immediately to end the conflict. Why doesn’t God simply end all evil and suffering in the world right now? Satan has accused God of being unfair. God has to allow the conflict to play out to show the universe what happens if Satan has his way. Unfortunately, we will not be able to completely explain why certain terrible events have happened or why certain people have suffered until the other side of eternity. Rest assured that in the end Jesus will triumph (Revelation 20:9-15; 21:1-4)!
Let’s read together Isaiah 53:1-12.
Jesus understands your suffering. He experienced the suffering of all humanity when He took all our sins upon Himself and died on the cross.
Let’s read together Deuteronomy 30:19; Ezekiel 33:11; and Matthew 23:37.
Have you ever thought about God’s suffering? God suffers when people reject Him. God does not want to destroy the wicked. He is giving everyone every chance to repent and to come to Him. The wicked will ultimately perish, but God will suffer their loss forever.
Friend, will you believe God is good and all-powerful? Will you trust He will eventually bring an end to evil and suffering in the world?
